THE SAINT OF LOST CAUSES BY AMERICAN SINGER JUSTIN TOWN

saint of lost causes

The Saint of Lost Causes is an eight-song album by American singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle. The album was released by New West Records in May of 2019. The first single off the album is “Don’t Play That Song”, which is a single from the band’s previous album All Too Now. Prior to this single, the only other track heard from The Saint of Lost Causes was the single “I’m Going to Explain”, from the band’s last album All Too Now. This single also came out prior to the band’s third album, Heretic.

The album is a collaboration between Townes and vocalist-guitarist Scott Weiland, who co-produced it with him. The band consists of Townes, bassist-singer John Butler and guitarist Taylor Swift, all with their own solo careers. The Saint of Lost Causes features guest stars such as Smokey Robinson (who appears on the acoustic guitar track “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” from the band’s second album All Too Now), The Weeknd and former Spice Girl Melanie Brown. The band has also recorded several songs with artists such as Timbaland, Akon, Lenny Kravitz, Busta Rhymes and J.Lo.

The title of the album is taken from a song by American folk artist Andy Sneff. The song, “The City Shake” tells the story of an escaped slave who stumbles across an old abandoned shack in the woods and begins to have a spiritual experience. The character in the story is inspired by the real-life story of former Mississippi State Representatives and candidate for governor, John Douglas. The album is full of soulful and nostalgic songs that help create a beautiful and memorable atmosphere for this album.

Just like the band’s previous albums The City Shake and Appalachian Nightmare, the new album contains vintage and original songs that are sure to bring tears to the eyes of anyone familiar with them. In fact, one of the best parts of the album is its very sad ending, as the lead singer prepares to jump into a car and get away from his/her current problems when they discover that everything they have been trying to do to better life has failed. The album then gets dark and foreshadowing music plays as the words “You can not drive away” flash across the screen. This ominous sign urges the listener to follow the singer out of the woods and away he goes on his quest for a better life.

With ten songs on this album, it is impossible for anyone not to be drawn into the beautiful music and lyrics. The songs are slow paced with mellow sounds and refrain from any sort of heavy metal. However, just when you think the whole song is about nothing other than the feelings, you will suddenly be swept away by one of the most passionate songs on the album named “Home.” Just when you think that it is about the break up of the relationship, the lyrics “Home, I’ll never leave you again” flashes back to remind you of why you were so eager to leave in the first place. This powerful song just keeps you hooked until the very end, where the artist takes us all on a crazy roller coaster ride through emotions that you probably haven’t experienced before.

The City Shake and Appalachian Nightmare do an amazing job at capturing the sound and mood of someone in love who is just starting out in the big world. These are two artists that you will definitely want to add to your music collection because of the beautiful things they have to say. They are both great at creating dreamlike and romantic environments through their music, and that is what you will find on Saint Paul & The Broken Strings. You will definitely grow to love these guys over time. You will definitely see them perform on the stage, because they have a way of bringing people to tears with their performances.
